Lessons From The Covid-19 Pandemic

The Covid 19 virus hit the world like a cyclone early 2020.

The last time there was something similar was the Spanish flu of 1919.

Many doctors as well the public and media were convinced that China unleashed the virus from a secretive viral facility located in Wuhan and to this day we don’t know if this is true or not.

Anyway people started falling ill and dying fast in many countries at the same time.

In India we had a lockdown in March 2020 that saw empty streets and cities for three weeks.

Hospitals filled up and many healthcare staff died too. Researchers worked on producing a vaccine and by Dec vaccines were ready.

The Indian govt as well Pharma and vaccine makers rose to the challenge and we had our own covid vaccine ready in 2021.

The second wave of infections during mid 21 caused a lot of deaths in India. Vaccinations picked up with the govt offering free vaccines for all.

Around 4.5 crore cases were reported in India with 5.3 lakh deaths during the pandemic.

Lot of public health lessons can be learnt from this pandemic.
Firstly keeping the country clean is a priority.
Wearing masks prevents infections that spread by coughing or sneezing and is always a healthy habit.

Vaccination is the only sure shot weapon against many diseases especially caused by viruses.

To face future pandemics we need trained healthcare staff, doctors and well equipped hospitals and we need to invest money and resources to update facilities in our country.

The World Health Organisation officially declared the pandemic to be over in May 2023, three years after the first cases hit the world.

Many questions remain but there is no doubt as a country India did well by supplying vaccines to poorer nations and saved lot of lives. Death rate from covid in India was one of the lowest at 1.1 percent and this has been attributed to many factors.

Will the world face another pandemic. Experts say very likely but we cannot afford to be lax in our preparedness.
